Unlocking/Activating the DME (ECU)

Unlocking/Activating the DME (ECU)

We have recently revised how security levels are identified; we’ll use higher “Wave Numbers” to indicate newest security measures from OEM.

Your DME (ECU) requires an unlock/activation in order to enable flashing through the MG Flasher app over the OBD II port. DMEs with older software/hardware may be unlockable directly from the app (over OBD), we call this level of security, Wave 1. If you have newer DME software, or updated it recently, there is a good chance it requires bench tools to unlock, this is Wave 2. If your DME was manufactured after July 2020, and has a recent boot control version, it needs to be shipped to a specialist for unlock (Femto, 1769, TAS, etc.); these are the most recent security measures from Bosch, Wave 3.

Specialists

Only specialists can unlock Wave 3 DMEs. As of February 2025, there are three known specialists; Femto, 1769 and TAS.

Determining your DMEs Security Level

Download the MG Flasher app for free from the Play Store or App Store and connect to your vehicle using an ENET Wi-Fi adapter or a wired ENET cable if preferred. For detailed connection instructions: Connection Guide.

On the MyCar page, you will find the wave number displayed next to "Security," along with an indication of whether an unlock has been detected and which company performed it.

Tap Check for Support to determine if your ECU requires a standard bench unlock (Wave 2, for ECUs built before 07.2020) or a special Femto bench unlock (Wave 3, for ECUs built after 07.2020). The tool will also check for boot control versions, specifically v04.00.03 and higher for Aurix (Gen 2) and v03.00.81 and higher for SPC (Gen 1).

If a bench unlock is required, please visit our dealer map to find the nearest Authorized Dealer who can perform this service: MG Flasher Dealer Locator.

Only select bootloaders are supported in MG Flasher. We do our best to add support for all updates as soon as possible. You can determine the ID and version numbers in MG Flasher App (via “Diagnostic Page” -> “Read ECU”) or through E-sys. The following bootloader versions are supported (updated Jan 2022):

Boot control v04.00.03 and higher for Aurix (Gen 2) and v03.00.81 and higher for SPC (Gen 1) will require Wave 3 unlocking from a specialist and cannot be unlock by every tuner/dealer!

Low Security: Unlock these ECUs in App via OBD
High Security: Bench unlock is required

The app provides many fail-safe methods during flashing, and one of them is to detect if the ECU is unlockable via OBD. If it must be unlocked on the bench, we have enabled 3rd party unlock detection for greater compatibility with different bench tools. Magic Motorsport’s excellent FLEX tool is available for MG Flasher Authorized Dealers to purchase and use with our exclusive built-in unlocking method. MG Flasher’s unlock is unique and provides excellent features:

  • CVN is untouched (kept the same), helps with maintaining warranty

  • Flashing counter is frozen, helps with tune detectability

  • OBD read protection is applied, deterrent from software pirates

Please contact us for bench unlock instructions/details.
